Almost 5,000 West Midlands dog attacks in the last five years

There has been a five-year spike in dog attacks since 2018 figures released by West Midlands Police show.

The recent figures come after a horrific incident where an 11-year-old girl and two others were attacked by an American bully XL last Saturday sparking a debate on dog ownership in the UK.

Ana Paun, 11, was attacked by the American bully XL and Staffordshire bull terrier crossbreed puppy in the Bordesley Green area of Birmingham last Saturday afternoon. The attack left three people with injuries, requiring all of the victims to receive medical aid.

A 60-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of possessing a dog dangerously out of control.

A total of 4,978 dog attacks have been reported by West Midlands Police since 2018, with 1,112 in the year 2022 alone.

The figures show that in 2018, a toltal of 671 dog attacks were registered by West Midlands Police, with 761 attacks registered the year after.

In 2020, 761 dog attacks were again registered in the West Midlands, jumping to 975 in 2021.
