Laura Preston was seen driving her Citroen C3 at 80mph in a 40mph zone before she running over Carl Durbin on a pedestrian crossing.

There were gasps and tears from his family when video of the incident was shown at Wolverhampton Crown Court on Thursday when the 37-year-old was sentenced for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Those in court saw the 59-year-old, who looked both ways before crossing Walsall Street in Willenhall, be thrown 20 feet into the air after Preston hit him at 52mph in a 30mph zone.

The impact left him fighting for his life and led to a three-month hospital stay. The grandfather sustained broken or fractured ribs, shoulder, pelvis, nose, neck, back, legs, two collapsed lungs as well as severe scarring on his face and head.
