Two police constables stumbled across the nine high-powered stolen cars while trying to track down one recently-stolen vehicle in Birmingham.

The haul in the Stechford area is thought to be the biggest ever find by West Midlands Police outside of a pre-planned operation.

Constables Amir Rahman Azadi and Mohammed Amer responded to a radio call on Tuesday for a stolen vehicle traced to the area via a GPS tracker which started pinging.

The officers patrolled the area and came across an underground car park on Station Road where they found the car they were looking for.

They continued to look around the car park and found a second stolen car.

Knives were also seized from the vehicles

Two finds soon became four, then six until officers finally unearthed nine stolen high-powered cars from the underground location.

Dangerous weapons were found inside the cars – including a machete and Rambo knives – which were seized by the force.

No arrests have been made so far, but West Midlands Police said work is continuing to track down the thieves.

Sergeant Lee Howkins said : "In 19 years of service this is the biggest single find of stolen vehicles from one proactive PNC check that I can think of.

"£300,000’s worth of stolen vehicles recovered in four hours. Hats off to Pc Amer and Pc Azadi. Stunning work.

"For a spontaneous live job, this is the largest car seizure I’ve known in my service."

The officers, who were due to finish at 3pm, left the scene just before 8pm having initially been called at 2.15pm.
