Akash Hussain, 23, crashed into Robert Davis as the 57-year-old crossed Bescot Crescent outside the Banks's Stadium in Walsall last year.

Mr Davis suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he died a short time later.

Hussain had been driving at more than double the speed limit in wet conditions in the build-up to the crash, which happened next to the Bescot Stadium railway station car park next to the M6.

CCTV showed Hussain travelling at speeds of approximately 70mph in a 30 zone prior to hitting Mr Davis.

It had been raining heavily throughout the afternoon, with large pools of water present on the carriageway, and was dark when the crash happened just before 7pm on January 14.

Hussain handed himself in to police three days after the crash after police issued photos of the silver car involved and appealed for help tracking him down.

Hussain, of Holden Crescent, Walsall, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and was jailed for four years and eight months at Wolverhampton Crown Court .

He will be disqualified from driving for nine years and four months on his release and required to sit an extended re-test before being allowed behind the wheel again.

Mr Davis, from the Walsall area, is survived by his wife and two sisters, who described him as "the most loving, caring husband, step-father, brother and friend anyone could wish for."

"He has left a massive hole in our lives and will be loved and missed forever," they said at the time.

Det Con Jamie Simon, from West Midlands Police, said: “Driving at these speeds under the road conditions on the night was totally unacceptable and caused the death of a man. Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr Davis.

“This irresponsible driver has now been jailed for his reckless actions, and this case should serve as a warning to others of the potentially fatal consequences of dangerous driving.”
