The imitation firearm was recovered after officers were called to reports of disorder in Jerome Road, in Walsall, at around 4.30pm on Friday.

West Midlands Police said the replica, which was seized from a 16-year-old boy, was "the most realistic imitation" they had ever seen.

In a tweet, the force said: "A teenager has been arrested by officers after they were called to reports of disorder in Walsall around 4.30pm on Friday.

"The 16-year-old was found in possession of an imitation firearm on Jerome Rd. Firearms officers said it was the most realistic imitation they had ever seen."

In a separate tweet, officers added: "Excellent work by task force officers working in the Walsall area today, effective use of stop and search when responding to reports of a disorder where weapons have been seen.

"An imitation firearm off the streets, now to understand why it was being carried."

A spokesman for West Midlands Police confirmed on Saturday afternoon that the teenager had been released pending further investigation.
