The 35-year-old man from Selly Oak gave himself up voluntarily just before 10.30am on Saturday morning after holding the woman hostage for more than 17 hours, armed with a knife, say police.

West Midlands Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene in Tarrant Grove, in Quinton, Birmingham at around 5pm on Friday.

The man was arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment, threats to kill and assault.

The 33-year-old woman, who was known to him, had received a cut to her arm. She was checked over by ambulance staff but was not seriously injured, though shaken by her ordeal.

A neighbour who lives in the block arrived home from work at 6.30pm on Friday.

He said: "I saw ambulances, police cars and they said I could not go into the block.

"I have had to stay in my van all night."
