Calls for tougher jail terms after Smethwick stabbings
A Sandwell MP has called for tougher jail terms against knife crime after two men were stabbed - one fatally - in Smethwick.
Warley MP John Spellar has also called on the Government to invest in putting more police officers on the streets.
It follows the two shocking incidents which happened just over 24 hours apart in his parliamentary constituency.
Mr Spellar told the Express & Star: "It is a very sad incident. Someone's life has been cut short so young.
"This is why we need knives off the street. That requires more police and tougher sentences for knife crime."
Asked about fears of an escalation in violence in the area, he said: "The police are best placed to judge that and they need to make sure there's a strong police presence, to deter any further incidents, and make sure those that are responsible are behind bars as quickly as possible."
He added: "The police have kept MPs informed, things seem to be moving rapidly [regarding the death of Mr Gallagher].
"Anybody who has information should provide that as quickly as possible to the police."
Concerns about knife crime were echoed by Sandwell Council leader Yvonne Davies, who urged "young men" to put down the knives.
"Young men need to recognise that carrying knives cost people their lives," she said.
"Carrying knives is unbelievably dangerous and in the heat of the moment, things can happen. We want better for our young men.
"I want to reiterate to our young people that carrying knives can result in the most appalling loss of life.
"If people are frightened, they need to contact the authorities and not resort to carrying weapons.
"Our condolences go out to the family of the victim who now have to deal with this tragic loss."
Community activist Rizwan Jalil also called for "calm" in the wake of the fatal stabbing.
"I am devastated by hearing about this very shocking incident and I urge for calm," he said.
"Such incidents cause understandable concern amongst local people.
"I want to give the community a clear message that we need to work together, and reassure each other, that we will talk and explain the consequences by communicating with our youth at home.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family."
