A Birmingham man has been charged after he allegedly spat at police officers telling them he had Covid-19.

Armaan Khan was detained by officers in Birmingham on Wednesday afternoon on suspicion of possessing cannabis.

But as officers arrested him, the 21-year-old spat and coughed at officers – telling them he had coronavirus.

Khan, of no fixed address, has been charged with assaulting an emergency worker and possession of cannabis.

He's been remanded in custody to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday, April 30.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "We have charged a man with assault after he allegedly spat at one of our officers, telling them he had Covid-19.

"As officers detained Armaan Khan on suspicion of possessing cannabis in Wills Street, in Lozells, on Wednesday afternoon, he allegedly spat and coughed at an officer, saying "I’ve got corona".

"The 21-year-old has now been charged with assaulting an emergency worker and possession of cannabis.

"He was remanded in custody by Birmingham Magistrates Court on Thursday for a hearing due on 30 April."
