Thug jailed after racially abusing children and hitting lollipop man with his own sign
A man who racially abused a taxi driver, nursery children and two police officers then smeared his cell with faeces has been jailed for nearly three years.
Daryl Jones was arrested last April after several members of the public reported him for his drunken, threatening and racist behaviour, West Midlands Police said.
Jones began his day of abuse when he and three of his friends were picked up by a taxi driver on an April afternoon in 2019.
They promised the driver he would be paid at the end of the trip to an address in Kings Norton but on the way Jones demanded a phone charger from the driver and became abusive when he could not get it to fit into his phone.
The 33-year-old proceeded to racially abuse the Asian man and told him he would stab and kill him if he did not drink from his can of beer.
The innocent driver was then hit in the face and punched in his eye, before Jones opened the windows and began swearing at passers-by as the car came to a stop.
He left the taxi with his group of friends but forgot his glasses, phone, driving licence and bank card.
Unemployed Jones then went off on his own and assaulted a lollipop man with his own sign on Haunch Lane, Kings Heath.
He was later reported by witnesses outside a nursery on Chamberlain Road where he was shouting racial insults at children.
He then punched the windscreen of a Fiat 500 car on the same road causing it to shatter before collapsing into a bush.
When officers came to arrest him, Jones threatened to spit into one of their faces.
He was taken into police custody and continued to shout racist names at the officers and finished off by smearing his own faeces across the entire cell.
Pc Amanda Winter from the West Midlands Police CID team, said: “Jones’ behaviour was completely unacceptable and quite frankly, downright disgusting.
“We welcome the sentence he has received and we wish to thank the numerous victims and the community for their resilience and bravery when confronting this man.”
Jones, of Offenham Covert in Kings Norton, was sentenced to 35 months in prison at Birmingham Crown Court after pleading guilty to two counts of assault causing bodily harm, assault, racially aggravated assault and racially aggravated harassment.
