Manhunt begins as house set on fire with woman and children inside

Police are hunting for an arsonist after a house was set on fire with two children and a woman inside.

The occupants managed to escape the fire in south Birmingham unharmed this morning as police began their search for the suspect.

West Midlands Police and firefighters were called to the scene at Farren Road, Northfield, at about 8.30am today.

The blaze was extinguished and officers immediately started searching the nearby area for the suspected arsonist.

Photos at the scene showed major smoke damage to the front of the house which also had broken upstairs windows.

Fire and police crews remained on the scene into the afternoon as investigations into the blaze continued.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Three people inside the property escaped uninjured but the fire is being treated as deliberate.

"Enquiries to trace the suspected arsonist are under way."

West Midlands Fire Service declined to comment.
