Man charged over menacing coronavirus call to Birmingham hospital

A man has been charged with sending menacing or offensive communications after hospital staff received threats on a phone call.

A man recorded himself making a phone call to City Hospital during which he said "I hope the staff die of coronavirus", then the video was posted online.

Matthew Wain, 31, was arrested from a flat in Perry Barr, Birmingham, yesterday and has been charged with sending menacing or offensive communications and has been bailed to appear at Birmingham Magistrates' Court on April 29.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "We’ve charged a man with allegedly making a menacing phone call to a West Midlands hospital and posting an offensive YouTube video entitled 'I hope all NHS die'.

"Matthew Wain was arrested from a flat in Perry Barr, Birmingham, in the early hours of yesterday in connection with a YouTube video in which a man recorded himself making a phone call to City Hospital.

"It’s alleged Wain made threats to staff during a phone call and also said 'I hope the staff die of coronavirus'.

"The 31-year-old has been charged with sending menacing or offensive communications and has been bailed to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on 29 April."
