The man, thought to be in his 20s, has been taken to hospital where he is being treated. His condition is described as critical but stable.

Police on patrol in the Aston area saw the attack taking place in Emscote Road just before 2.15am. They called for paramedics and arrested a 37-year-old man at the scene.

He remains in police custody on suspicion of attempted murder, assault and possession of a knife.

Officers are now appealing for help in order to identify the victim.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: "Ongoing enquiries suggest the man is Polish. He has dark hair and a distinctive dragon tattoo on his right calf. He was found wearing a black zip shirt, red jacket, black trousers, and a silver bracelet with silver beads.

"If you think you know who this man is, please get in touch as soon as possible.

"We’re also keen to hear from any witnesses who were in the area and saw what happened in the lead up to the attack, as well as those with any other relevant information."
