Passer-by chases down suspect who 'drove wrong way on dual carriageway'
The suspect was caught on foot after a dramatic car chase where a tyre was punctured near Merry Hill shopping centre.
A dramatic Black Country police pursuit ended when a member of the public helped chase down a suspected drug dealer and car thief.
The man was caught on foot after first trying to escape by driving the wrong way along a busy dual carriageway in a stolen car with a punctured tyre, police said.
The incident unfolded in Netherton and Brierley Hill on Thursday.
Officers said the road chase started when a hatchback drove away from police at speed, overtaking and driving dangerously on Highbridge Road in Netherton.
The car was chased along Narrowboat Way where it hit a kerb and punctured the front passenger side tyre.
Despite the damage, the driver is said to have continued at speed towards dual-carriageway Pedmore Road, near the Merry Hill shopping centre.
Police said the driver eventually abandoned the car but only after first trying to drive the wrong way along Pedmore Road.
When the driver and passenger ran from the vehicle, officers gave chase on foot and managed to catch the alleged drive with the help of a member of the public who also chased after him.
The driver, who was wanted for recall to prison, was arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle, dangerous driving, failing to stop and being concerned in the supply of drugs, Pc Jamie Follows said.
The passenger was detained nearby and arrested on suspicion of theft of motor vehicle and being concerned in the supply of the drugs.
Pc Follows, a West Midlands Police officer based in Dudley, described the chase in an alert sent out to residents where he thanked the member of the public for helping to detain the driver.
