Man arrested after hit-and-run leaves woman critical
A man has been arrested after a woman was left in critical condition in hospital after a hit-and-run crash in Handsworth.
The 40-year-old woman was hit on College Road, next to St Andrew’s Church in Handsworth Wood, just before 7pm on Thursday.
Police say the driver of the car involved stopped to speak to two members of the public before getting back into his vehicle and driving off.
A 23-year-old man was arrested from his home address in Birmingham at 11pm on Thursday night on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop following a collision and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs. He was in police custody today.
Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "We have spoken to a number of witnesses but we are continuing to appeal for anyone with information to get in touch.
“In particular I would urge the two men who spoke to the driver to contact us as soon as possible as they hold vital information that could help our investigation."
College Road was closed for several hours between Somerset Road and Church Road while collision investigators examined the scene.
