Wolverhampton Ring Road cordoned off after police officer assault

A police officer has been assaulted prompting part of the busy Wolverhampton Ring Road to be closed this evening.

Police are now searching for the offenders who carried out the assault on Ring Road St David's.

The male police officer has been taken to hospital with injuries which are not thought to be serious.

An area of Ring Road St David's, with the junction of Wednesfield Road, was cordoned off at around 6pm following the incident. A motorbike and car could be seen within the cordon, as well as yellow evidence markers on the road.

A police helicopter was also seen and heard in the area during the search.

A spokesman from West Midlands Police said: "A section of the Ring Road in Wolverhampton is currently closed following an incident where an officer was assaulted.

"He has been taken to hospital with injuries which are not thought to be serious.

"An area search is underway to try and locate the offenders.

"Traffic is likely to be busy so please avoid the area."
