It is alleged that three boys – aged 15, 16 and 17 – were among a group of six who burst into an address in Summerfields Avenue and threatened the people inside with knives at about 2am on Thursday.

The thieves – one of whom held a knife to a man's neck – stole a mobile phone, games console and a Mini Cooper, having taken the car keys.

But they triggered an automatic number plate recognition camera 45 minutes later and police picked up the vehicle driving 60mph in a 30mph zone in the Kates Hill area of Dudley.

They abandoned the car near Oakham Road, before the driver and two passengers ran off through Buffery Park.

A West Midlands Police dog tracked the suspects to a nearby address and the three boys, who are too young to be legally named, were arrested.

They were charged last night with aggravated burglary and remanded in police custody before appearing this morning at Dudley Magistrates Court.

The two older teenagers were remanded into secure youth detention while the 15-year-old was bailed with conditions including an electronically-tagged overnight curfew.
