Whitmore Reans hit-and-run victim named as police continue investigation
A hit-and-run crash victim has been named by police as 63-year-old Peter Salter.
Mr Salter, who was a pedestrian, died at the scene after he was found with serious injuries in Evans Street, Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton, at about 10.05pm on Saturday.
A 48-year-old, who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, has since been released under investigation.
But detectives are still investigating the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
Paying tribute to Mr Salter, who lived in Whitmore Reans, his family said in a statement: "Peter Salter, who was known as Pete, was 63 years of age and married.
"He lived in Whitmore Reans with his wife Mary. He worked as a painter decorator and handy man.
"He had many friends in the area and was a very friendly person who always had time for a chat - he was well known in the local Asda by all the staff members from meeting his wife from work.
"Pete also did a lot of charity work with his wife, including running the conservatory in West Park for over two years.
"They then went on to work with the Alzheimer’s Society with whom he would have been doing an event this Saturday in the West Park.
"He is a great loss to all who knew him and will be sadly missed by all.”
A silver Mercedes which is believed to have been involved in the collision was recovered nearby.
Police have appealed for anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
PC David Hand, from West Midlands Police collision investigation unit, said: “We are investigating the circumstances of what happened.
"There were a number of witnesses at the scene, but I would like to appeal for anyone who saw the collision or the vehicle involved to come forward if they have not done so already.
"We would also be interested to hear from anyone who may have dashcam footage that captured any part of the incident.
"The family of Mr Salter are being supported by specialist officers, and our thoughts are with them at this time.”
