The distressed victim, who has learning difficulties, visited his bank to withdraw a large amount of money to pay off a rogue trader, who offered tree-cutting services.

But staff at the town centre branch raised the alarm before the elderly man could withdraw the cash on Thursday.

Police waited in unmarked vehicles for the rogue trader to collect the money, but he has not returned.

The force said the elderly man's neighbours will ring 999 if they see any suspicious activity.

PCSO Megan McAndrew said: "Whilst they did not return this time to the address to collect money, his neighbours are aware of what has happened and we hope will give us a ring on 999 if they see these rogue traders again."
