Police given extra time to question burglary suspects

Police have been given extra time to question four men arrested after a serious of burglaries targeting elderly people.

A superintendent extension has been granted over the arrests of the men, aged 22, 22, 19 and 30, who were arrested over the weekend on suspicion of conspiracy to burgle.

They will remain in custody for questioning until the morning.

It comes after West Midlands Police made a public appeal to catch the perpetrators behind 29 burglaries in a 10-day period.

A gang of masked burglars targeted elderly people in the Black Country, sometimes posing as police officers and officials from utility firms.

Four other men, aged 43, 28, 25 and 20, were arrested on Friday in the Goldthorn Park area of Wolverhampton and bailed.

On one night six incidents took place. The burglaries saw men gain entry to elderly people's homes by either brute force or conning their way in.

Chief Superintendent Sally Bourner said catching the culprits was a "a top priority for police in the Black Country".

On Saturday, two 22-year-old men and a 19-year-old, were arrested in the Wrexham area of Wales. A 30-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning.
