Dean Turner, of Grove Terrace, Walsall, did not enter a plea to the manslaughter charge and was remanded on bail until December 12 when he will be expected to say whether he is guilty or not.
His 65-year-old father Garry Turner died following an incident in the garden of his home in Wolverhampton Road, Pelsall, an inquest heard.
The retired traffic engineer - originally from from Chasetown in Staffordshire - was taken to Manor Hospital, Walsall, on August 24, suffering from a head injury and died four days later.
The inquest has been adjourned to a date to be fixed.
