Kulwinder Kaur, aged 52, was struck hit in an alleged hit-and-run collision while crossing Cavendish Road, Walsall, on September 12, a court heard.
An inquest was opened and adjourned yesterday while criminal proceedings take place.
Lewis Jukes, 20, from High Street, Brownhills, has been charged with causing her death by dangerous driving.
He will appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on October 15 ahead of a trial.
Ms Kaur, a care worker, died at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics to save her.
She was born in India but moved to the UK and lived at Park View Crescent, Walsall.
Coroner Zafar Siddique told Black Coroner Coroner's Court: “Given the circumstances that police are investigating and there are criminal charges, I will formally suspend the inquest pending the outcome of a trial.
“I would like to offer my condolences to the loved ones of Ms Kaur.”
He continued: “The circumstances are that, at 1pm on September 12, Ms Kaur was crossing the road when she was struck by a car which failed to stop at the scene. At 1.34pm, she was pronounced dead.”
Jukes has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, failing to stop at the scene of a collision, failing to report a collision and driving without insurance.
Her family claim they were racially abused after leaving flowers at the crash scene.
