The 24-year-old's Renault Clio was still doing 47mph after the collision which took the life of Richard Cheshire, revealed Mr Benjamin Williams, prosecuting.

The victim had been trying to cross the road and was knocked down after the Clio pulled out to overtake another car, the court heard.

Mohammed from Marshall Street, Smethwick pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and having no insurance.

He also tested positive for cocaine after the crash but the final results are still not known, the court was told.

Mr Gurdeep Garcha, defending, maintained: "He is under no illusion that he will receive anything other than a substantial prison sentence."

This was confirmed by Judge James Burbidge QC who told Mohammed: "You have admitted responsibility for a serious crime and a judge will take a serious view of it."

The defendant was remanded in custody until October 4 when he is expected to be sentenced after the full facts of the case have been outline to the court.

After his death, Mr Cheshire's family said in a statement: "We lost our son, brother, dad, grandad, cousin, uncle and friend to many, way too soon.

"We will never get over this heartache.

"You were taken so cruelly, our hearts are broken."
