Air ambulance called as man injured in Wolverhampton 'stabbing'

A man was taken to hospital with "potentially serious injuries" after being attacked in a Wolverhampton shop.

The man was reported to have been stabbed in a corner shop in Whitmore Reans last night.

Police and paramedics were sent to the scene and an air ambulance tried to land at Wolverhampton Racecourse before the man was taken by land ambulance to hospital.

The incident happened in the Mini Market shop on the corner of Craddock Street and Dunstall Road at around 5.30pm.

A 28-year-old man, who only wished to be called Lee, arrived at the shop shortly afterwards only to be told it was closed.

The Mini Market remained cordoned off at lunchtime on Wednesday

He explained: "I pulled up to the shop at about 5.30pm to get some cigarettes.

"As I was about to get my son out the car, I saw there was quite a few people distressed.

"I went to the door and tried to open it and the shopkeeper's elder brother, opened the door and said 'no', and then closed it.

"Another shopkeeper (from a different shop) said someone had been stabbed.

"Next thing you know the ambulance came, the air ambulance tried to land on the racecourse and obviously he was taken to hospital."

Two police vans, and a third off image, remained at the scene on Wednesday

The Mini Market remained cordoned off today with three police riot vans parked up outside.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called to reports of an assault at the Mini Market, at the corner of Craddock Street and Dunstall Road, at about 5.40pm on Tuesday.

"One ambulance, two paramedic officers, the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and a Midlands Air Ambulance critical care car was sent to the scene.

"A man was assessed and treated at the scene for potentially serious injuries before being taken on blue lights to hospital.

"The doctor from the Midlands Air Ambulance aircraft travelled with the crew."

West Midlands Police has yet to respond for comment.
