Armed police swooped on the car after the man reached for the weapon, which turned out to be a BB gun, during a row on Cakemore Road.
Firearms officers said the firearm looked like a real gun to the person who it was pointed at.
Officers responded following a call at around 12.30pm.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear or violence.
Firearms Operations Unit said on Twitter: "ARVs (armed response vehicles) have just arrested a suspect who thought it was appropriate to point a handgun at a member of the public during a road rage incident. It transpired that it was a BB gun but would you know the difference if it was pointed at you? I certainly wouldn’t."
