Hate crime on the rise in Walsall, says cabinet member

Hate crime is on the rise in a Black Country borough, a senior councillor has warned.

Councillor Garry Perry made the revelation at Walsall Council's latest cabinet meeting.

Councillor Perry, cabinet member for leisure and culture, was speaking about reports of a leaflet issued by a UKIP candidate in the borough.

The leaflet, according to Mr Perry, said money should not be spent on tackling hate crimes.

"It then goes to support Tommy Robinson (the EDL founder)," said councillor Perry.

He continued: "Hate crime is on the rise in Walsall.

"That person who has pushed that leaflet through the letter box has probably never been a victim of hate crime.

"To put that in literature and get a few grubby votes from people who comform with that view is appalling.

"Hate crime is happening on social media in Walsall. I have seen that after (the terror attacks) in Sri Lanka and Christchurch."
