Police believe the boys, aged 16 and 17, were deliberately run over in Newhampton Road at around 8pm on Thursday.

The car drove off without stopping leaving the boys with serious injuries. They were taken to hospital, where they were still being treated on Saturday morning.

Detectives have trawled CCTV and are now searching for the car involved, which is described as a dark Volkswagen or Audi and is believed to have been damaged in the crash.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Sarah Lewin, from West Midlands Police, said: “We are treating this as a deliberate act and urging anyone who saw what happened or has information on who was involved to get in touch with us.

“A dark car, possibly a long saloon VW or Audi hit the teens and then drove off without stopping. The car is likely to have damage to the front and be very noticeable.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police, quoting crime reference number 20WV/44672N/19.
