Cannock Police posted the warning on their Twitter account this evening after heathland backing onto Hillary Crest caught fire at around 5pm.

Police said it was believed a group of "intoxicated youths" were responsible.

But by 7pm, a spokesman for Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had been dealt with.

They added: "It was 50 metres by 30 metres of grassland that was well alight, but the fire has now been dealt with by crews.

"We had the first call alerting us to the fire at around 5.15pm on Saturday afternoon."

A spokesman for Cannock Police said: "Please stay away from the heathland at the top of the Pear Tree (Hillary Crest) and Horse Lane due to a large fire. Reports state a group of intoxicated youths are responsible."

Anyone with information was asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 613 of February 23.
