Great Barr funeral parlour sex attacker jailed
A burglar who had sex with a dead body after breaking into a funeral parlour in Great Barr has been jailed for six years.
Kasim Khuram was also ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years after disturbing nine coffins during a drug-induced psychosis last November.
Sentencing, judge Melbourne Inman QC told 23-year-old Khuram the case had shocked everyone who had been involved in bringing him to justice.
He told him: “The offences that you have committed offend all human sensitivity.
“I am not aware of – and nor have I been able to find – any similar case.
“It would be difficult to think of a greater depravation of the dignity of the dead.”
Khuram pleaded guilty to the offence at the Central England Co-operative Funeralcare home in Walsall Road in Tower Hill.
He also admitted burglary of the funeral home on November 11 with the intention of stealing.
Following an earlier hearing, a Central England Co-operative spokesman, said the case had had a profoundly upsetting effect on staff, whose main concern was for the family involved.
He also thanked police officers who managed to rush to the scene and catch the offender on the premises.
He said: “Our primary concern is for the families we serve and the welfare of our funeral colleagues who have all been deeply affected by this incredibly disturbing and unprecedented event.
“The security measures at Great Barr are such that the alarm alerted the police, who were thankfully able to apprehend the suspect at the scene.
“We would like to thank the West Midlands Police for their care and assistance and we will work to support them in any way possible.
“We will not be making any further comment until the conclusion of this case.”
The sentencing hearing was held today following an adjournment to allow for psychiatric reports to be completed.
