All hell broke loose as Kevin Jones went berserk while high on drugs during the early hours of August 29, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

The 30-year-old, who was armed with either a knife or piece of broken glass, threatened to kill two police officers during the drama, a judge heard.

The woman, who was in a relationship with him at the time, saw the defendant walking down the street as she drove from work to her home shortly after midnight.

When she stopped to ask him to return the keys to her flat he climbed uninvited into the car but she drove off with him in the front passenger seat.

Without warning Jones pulled on the hand brake as the vehicle went round a corner, attacked her and yelled abuse.

He got out and carried on walking while she searched for a phone to call police because the battery on her mobile was flat, said Mr Richard McConaghy, prosecuting.

By the time officers reached the scene Jones had locked himself into the first-floor flat.

Abuse and violence

A police body camera showed him leaning out of an upstairs window while waving what looked like a knife as he hurled more abuse at his partner and warned police: 'Don't come in or I will stab you,' the court heard.

He also screamed 'I will cut them all' as the sound of breaking glass echoed from the upstairs flat in the two-storey building. Neighbours woken by the noise were told to stay inside their home as police negotiators tried to calm him down.

Jones, who had previous convictions for 40 offences and knew a warrant had been issued for his arrest after he failed to comply with a community order, tore a wardrobe door off its hinges, smashed a window, smeared his blood over the walls after self harming and tried to start a fire in the flat during the £1,000 wrecking spree.

He was finally persuaded to come out at around 6.30am and the next day magistrates jailed him for 12 weeks for the community order breach.

Mr Stephen Lee, defending, said: "When not taking substances he is a lovely guy but is a different person when under the influence of drugs. Now he is determined to turn his life around."

Jones, of no fixed address, admitted affray, assault, criminal damage and making threats to kill.

Judge Barry Berlin jailed him for two years and three months and said: "All hell broke loose. For five-and-a-half hours police tried to get you to come out. You were drugged and threatening to kill the officers. The screaming, shouting and swearing went on and on."
