Shane Wellington, from Chantry Avenue, Walsall, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison after appearing at Wolverhampton Crown Court on January 4.

The 24-year-old and an unknown accomplice broke into a house in St John's Road in July 2018 by lifting up a garden fence panel and forcing open a window.

The pair stole jewellery, cash and electrical items before taking off in two push bikes found in a shed.

Police carried out a CCTV trawl of the area where Wellington and his accomplice could be seen riding the stolen bikes down a canal footpath.

The footage was shared among officers and after evading several arrest attempts the 24-year-old was spotted by police on November 27 and was arrested and charged for burglary and handling stolen goods.

The prolific offender was also charged with two other crimes, dangerous driving and theft.

On July 26 he failed to stop for police when driving a stolen red Ford Fiesta and on November 4 he stole petrol from a garage in Wednesfield.

After initially denying the offences, he eventually plead guilty and was sent to prison.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that efforts are on-going to identify and locate Wellington's accomplice in the home burglary.
