Smethwick murder victim 'had been strangled in prolonged attack'

A pensioner who died after being found injured in Smethwick had been strangled and suffered multiple rib fractures, a court was told.

Gurmukh Singh, aged 70, was found at a house in White Road on Friday and later died in hospital.

Palvinder Hayre, 50, of White Road, is accused of his murder.

Hayre appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court yesterday where Cathlyn Orchard, prosecuting, said Mr Singh had been thrown to the floor.

"This was a prolonged assault where by there was multiple rib fractures and strangulation," Ms Orchard said.

A post mortem revealed Mr Singh died as a result of blunt force injury.

Hayre, who remains in police custody, has not entered a plea yet but a provisional trial date has been set for May 23.

Detectives investigating the alleged murder have obtained CCTV from the area.
