Luke McGuire drove at up to 70mph in a 30mph limit in the Hyundai while pursing police had to hit 89mph trying to keep up with him, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

The chase started after the unemployed 25-year-old ignored an order by officers to stop and accelerated away along Clapgate Lane in Halesowen.

He carried on through Carters Lane and Spies Lane before crashing into the back of a parked police car that had nothing to do with the chase.

More background on the case

The police officers of the vehicle that was hit had been supervising a car being taken away on a recovery truck shortly before 11pm on September 5, explained Mr Edward Soulsby, prosecuting.

McGuire, who had neither a driving licence nor any insurance, fled from the wreckage but was caught after being chased on foot, the court heard.

The crash caused more than £5,000 worth of damage to the parked police car, it was revealed.

McGuire had bought the Hyundai earlier that same day and suspected it had been stolen because he paid just £400 for the vehicle, conceded Miss Charmaine Robinson, defending.

She continued: “This was a disgraceful piece of driving.

“He knew he did not have a driving licence or insurance and panicked when he saw the police.

“It was fortunate that nothing more serious happened.”

What sentence was handed out?

McGuire from Lye Avenue, Woodgate admitted dangerous driving and having no insurance or a driving licence.

The 25-year-old was given a 14-month prison sentence suspended for two years by the court.

He was also banned from driving for 18 months, ordered to complete a series of rehabilitation courses and must carry out 200 hours unpaid work.

McGuire must also pay £340 costs.
