Footage of the raid has been released by West Midlands Police after a crook who caused more than £20,000 worth of damage to two police cars was jailed for almost five years.

Taron McAuley was part of a gang who used two stolen Land Rovers to rip the ATM out of the wall of a Birmingham shop in snowy conditions on the evening of March 1.

The incident happened at the One Mobile shop in Edward Street, Balsall Heath.

The group tied a strap around the cash machine and dragged it out of the wall, using the cars to tow it through the snow.

After witnesses phoned the police, the gang fled the scene and left the ATM in the road with an estimated £100,000 inside.

McAuley, 22, from Hall Green, who was driving one of the stolen vehicles, rammed into two armed response police cars before hitting a lamppost on Shutlock Lane.

He fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterwards.

The ATM abandoned in the snow after it came loose.

McAuley pleaded guilty to burglary and denied handling stolen goods and driving dangerously, but was found guilty of both offences at Birmingham Crown Court and sentenced to four years and eight months in prison on September 19.

Detective Constable Louise Davies, from the force’s priorities team, said: “McAuley was part of a gang who used stolen high-powered cars who went to great lengths to try and get away with the stolen cash machine.

"His actions were reckless and put many others in danger as the road conditions that evening were treacherous.

“In his desperation to get away from armed officers he caused over £20,000 worth of damage to two of our armed response vehicles."
