Police were alerted by the ambulance service at around 12.20pm on Wednesday.

Forensic officers have been combing the the flat for clues to the brutal killing and a post-mortem examination is expected soon.

There are not thought to have been any obvious signs of a break-in at the flat where the victim had lived for years.

Police are trawling through CCTV footage from security cameras in the area for information that could help the inquiry and making door-to-door inquiries.

Shocked friends of Mr Shepperson, who lived alone, said he had been off work with depression for some time but had recently perked up and had started going to the gym.

One person said: “This is dreadful news. He was a quiet man but sociable and would always say hello. He would not have hurt a fly.”

Detective Inspector Paul Joyce, from West Midlands Police’s Homicide Unit, said: “At this time no arrests have been made, but our officers have worked to secure CCTV, witness accounts and evidence from the scene.

"Every bit of information is vital to our investigation.”
