Teenager in court over attempted murder after hammer attack

A teenager has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder after a hammer attack in Wolverhampton.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Wolverhampton Crown Court today following the assault with a claw hammer in Wolverhampton on July 12.

Another 17-year-old was left in a critical condition following the incident, which took place in Bilston Street.

Judge James Burbidge QC remanded the teenager into a youth offenders institution ahead of a trial, due to start on January 14.

The victim needed emergency surgery after suffering serious head injuries in the attack, which happened in the Bilston Street underpass at around 8pm.

Police launched an urgent appeal for information following the assault in the underpass which runs below the city centre ring road.
