Boy killed and two people seriously injured in tragic M6 crash
A lorry driver has been arrested in connection with crash which shut the motorway for more than seven hours
An eight-year-old boy has died and two people have been seriously injured after a horror crash on the M6.
Police have arrested a lorry driver on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The motorway was closed for more than seven hours after the crash between a lorry and a car.
Emergency services were called to the motorway close to Spaghetti Junction at around 7.30pm on Thursday.
The crash involved a red Toyota Yaris car, which is believed to have stopped on the hard shoulder.
It happened on the southbound section between junctions 6 for the Aston Expressway and 5 for Castle Bromwich.
The boy, from Leicester, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews arrived to find three patients, all of whom had been travelling in the car.
“The boy was found to be in cardiac arrest and ambulance staff immediately began CPR.
“Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.
“A man, believed to be in his 60s, was treated for a suspected fractured shoulder and a woman, believed to be in her 20s, was treated for a leg injury."
Both patients were taken to Heartlands Hospital in the same ambulance.
The lorry driver, a 62-year-old man from Hampshire, was arrested and will be questioned.
Highways England said the motorway reopened after 3am.
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 2160 of 31 May.
