Thug who ‘could have killed’ brother jailed over frenzied Walsall stab attack
A man who repeatedly stabbed his brother in a frenzied attack was starting a nine-and-a-half year jail sentence today.
Gareth Cable, aged 42, knifed James Cable at least seven times at the home of their sister after an argument, a jury heard.
The victim was wounded in the right shoulder, face, back of the head, arm, hand and through the cheek into his mouth.
The assault could have claimed the life of James if a police officer had not Tasered the defendant in the back, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.
Trouble flared when James Cable returned to the address in Birchfield Way, Walsall a day after making a ‘significant nuisance of himself’ and being ejected by police officers.
He was detained overnight but went back to the house after being released at around 11.30am.
Police were alerted but the defendant went outside to confront his brother before they reached the scene, said Mr Harpreet Sandhu, prosecuting.
The officers had gone inside to discuss the situation with other members of the family when he suddenly pulled out a knife.
Film from a police body camera showed Gareth Cable jabbing his arm towards his brother before being Tasered.
The victim underwent surgery for his wounds and is said to have made a ‘remarkable’ recovery.
Mr Oliver Woolhouse, defending, said: “James Cable had been removed from the home of his sister and detained overnight by the police as a result of his conduct.
“When he left the police station the following morning he came straight round to the same address.
"There was some provocation but the response of the defendant was inexcusable.”
Gareth Cable from Norton Crescent, Bordesley Green was found not guilty of attempted murder.
He admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of two knives.
Judge James Burbidge QC jailed him for nine years six months and said: “But for the use of the Taser you may well have killed your brother.”
