Jail for man caught growing cannabis above Wolverhampton shop
A man caught growing up to £23,000 worth of cannabis in his home has been jailed.
Police raided Kyle Hamer's flat above a shop in Wolverhampton following a tip-off and found 35 cannabis plants in a spare bedroom, heated by eight 600 watt light units, a court heard.
Mr Neil Ahuja, prosecuting, said the drugs bust on August 13 last year yielded between 980g and 2.9kgs of cannabis which would have sold for between £5,600 and £23,000 on the streets.
Hamer, 23, initially told police the plants were for his own use, claiming to have a £500-a-week cannabis habit but later retracted the statement, saying he 'might have exaggerated' the amount he used.
Wolverhampton Crown Court heard he had a history of offending although none related to drugs.
In his defence, Mr David Swinnerton said Hamer had told him he had inherited the plants after moving into the flat only a month before the raid but had wanted to take full responsibility for the offence out of a sense of loyalty to others.
However he admitted he had watered the plants and accepted he had played a role in growing them.
Hamer, of St Giles Road, Willenhall, who pleaded guilty to one count of producing cannabis, was jailed for eight months.
