A man accused of murdering a pedestrian in the Black Country has appeared in court for the first time.

Paul Emmerson was allegedly in a car that is said to have dragged victim Mohammed Miah, aged 22 and from Tipton, along the street.

The 38-year-old, wearing a white T-shirt and grey tracksuit bottoms, spoke only to give his name, address and date of birth when he was brought before Birmingham magistrates yesterday.

He was ordered to appear at Birmingham Crown Court tomorrow.

Mr Miah died soon after the incident in High Street, West Bromwich, in the early hours of Saturday.

The road, including shops and food outlets, was cordoned off for more than 12 hours while forensic officers carried out an extensive examination of the area.

Part of Trinity Way was also blocked off from traffic following the incident at around 2.40am.

The victim was described in a family tribute as 'kind-hearted, courageous, caring and selfless'.

Emmerson, of Kemp Road, Kitts Green, Birmingham, was remanded in custody until tomorrow’s hearing.

Police are still appealing for people to contact officers on 101, quoting log 281 of March 17, if they have any information.
