Police were called to the house in Garretts Green Lane, Sheldon, on Saturday afternoon.

The road was closed off as a 25-metre cordon was put around the property. A number of nearby homes were evacuated as specialists from the Army's Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit were called in.

A 29-year-old man was later arrested on the M42 on suspicion of firearms offences in connection with the Sheldon incident.

A West Midlands Police spokesman today said: "A Birmingham man has been arrested on suspicion of firearms offences after suspicious items were found at an address in Garretts Green Lane just before 1pm yesterday.

"The 29-year-old from Sheldon was arrested yesterday afternoon in a vehicle on the Solihull by-pass and remains in police custody.

"A cordon was placed around the property and several homes were evacuated as a precaution.

"The EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team attended and following a forensic search of the property several items were seized. The cordon was scaled back to the house around 6pm and residents were allowed back to their homes."
