The bus lane off the ring road closed off by police

The 22-year-old man was found with head injuries by the ambulance service at 3.30am today.

He was found lying motionless on the ground in the bus lane near Broad Street, and was taken to hospital where he died this morning.

The man’s family are currently being supported by specialist officers.

Police say it is understood the man may have fallen from a bridge, and part of the road remains closed while police conduct their enquiries.

Part of the bridge over the ring road remained cordoned off near Sainsbury's today, while the bus station entrance was also sealed off.

People out in the city centre yesterday spoke of their shock at what had happened.

Matt Rice, aged 26, of Castlecroft, said: "It is sad really for the guy.

"His young age makes it even worse - he was only 22.

"It seems very rare for this sort of thing to happen - people falling from that bridge.

"It is shocking and a shame."

Steve Boulding, aged 70, said: "It is obviously a terrible tragedy and a shock."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 646 of October 29.
