Cain Highfield’s relatives have been attempting to raise £35,000 for a life-changing operation which would allow him to walk.

But they have now been dealt a huge blow after burglars struck at his grandmother’s home and trashed a special nursery which had been created for him.

The burglars also took the two-year-old’s first ever Christmas present in 2016.

Burglars raided the property in the Northwood Park, Bushbury area of Wolverhampton on Saturday.

It is understood that they smashed their way in through the back kitchen window to gain access to the property of Angela Flavell, aged 41.

Angela is the mother of Zoe Highfield, aged 24, who is a single parent to Cain.

Burglars ransacked the home

The trio had just returned from Zoe's nearby home at around 12.30pm on Saturday when they opened the door to the property.

Angela said: "As soon as I opened the door, I knew something was wrong.

"Everything was everywhere. I was scared, but I knew I had to be brave for my daughter and grandson.

The stolen toy car

"I thought the burglars might still be in the house, so I told them to stay outside and not move while I checked every room."

Angela found that thieves had ransacked the home, taking the electric BMW i8 sit in car which was the first Christmas present of little Cain.

They also took his DVDs and trashed his special nursery created for him by his grandmother, who has only just been made redundant from her job as a florist.

Currently, the family are trying to raise money so that Caine can undergo selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) - an operation used to improve muscle stiffness in cerebral palsy. It costs £35,000 and so far the family have raised £1,600.

Cain developed the condition after being born 13 weeks premature and was born weighing just 1lb 9oz.

The burglars also helped themselves to an LG TV, stereo and silver diamanté chandelier.

Mother Zoe Highfield, said: "It makes me so angry, upset. My little boy does not deserve this.

Cain in June this year

"Everybody knows us in the community and knows Cain is disabled so if we find out it's someone we know who has done this it will make it even worse."

Forensic investigators have already visited the house.

Zoe said: "The investigators have said they found fingerprints which they are looking to process, so hopefully that will come to something."

Angela added: "I don't event care about the stuff they took from me. But to think they took my grandson's toys makes me feel sick. I want to find out who they are and look them in the eye."

The incident has also appalled ward councillors.

Councillor Ian Angus, Labour Council for Bushbury North said: "This is awful.

"Please keep an eye out and if you have any information about who might be responsible please report it."
