Teenager locked up after gun fired at Birmingham's Broadway Plaza
A teenager has been locked up for three years for possessing a gun after shots were heard in Birmingham last month.
The 17-year-old, who cannot be named due to his age, appeared at Birmingham Crown Court today after pleading guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon at Birmingham Youth Court on August 14.
Police were called to Broadway Plaza in the Ladywood area of Birmingham on the night of August 11 after gunshots were heard and a group of youths were seen in the area.
The teen was seen to discard something under a car after he ran from officers who gave chase and arrested him, also recovering the loaded weapon.
Detective Inspector Richard Marsh from Force CID said: "To identify, disrupt and reduce the number of firearms available across the region is a priority for West Midlands Police.
"Firearms have no place on our streets and we invest significant resources into recovering weapons and bringing offenders to justice.
"The sentence handed out by the judge today shows that even handling such a deadly weapon carries a considerable jail term and this should act as a deterrent to others."
