Sainsbury's in Blackheath was evacuated in May as armed police swarmed on the store.

A 16-year-old boy pleaded guilty to making an improvised explosive device and intending to cause an explosion likely to endanger life at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court yesterday. He also admitted possession of a knife.

The boy, who cannot be named because of his age, is due to be sentenced on August 4.

He spoke only to confirm his name and address and enter pleas during the short hearing.

Hundreds of shoppers were ordered the leave Sainsbury's on May 27 as a cordon was put up around the store after loud bangs were heard coming from the toilets.

District Judge Andrew Wheeler told him: "You have pleaded guilty and that is to your credit.

"These are very serious matters and you may well be sentenced outside my powers."
