The art deco lanterns, worth around £11,000, were taken from the front of Chancel Primary School in Rugeley on March 11, between 10:30pm and 10:50pm.

The decorative items had graced the entrance to the school which is next to the Old Chancel - thought to be the town's oldest remaining structure dating back to the 12th Century.

Sergeant Jamie McArthur, of Cannock Chase Local Policing Team, made a live appeal on Tuesday's Crimewatch Roadshow.

He said: “I’m appealing for help from anyone who can recognise these men or may have seen these lanterns, or perhaps been offered them for sale.

“The lanterns have been part of the school since it was built in the 1930s. We’re determined to catch these thieves and trace the lanterns.”

He described the men as white, early 20s, around 5ft 10ins tall and wearing dark clothing and beanie hats.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting reference number 245 of March 11.
