Stabbing sees Willenhall pub stripped of licence
A Willenhall pub has had its licence suspended after a man was stabbed during a fight in the early hours.
The Poets Corner pub in Keats Lane, Short Heath, has had its licence suspended following a number of incidents which culminated in the stabbing on June 17.
On that occasion police were sent to the pub in the early hours and found two men seriously injured - one had been stabbed and the other was treated for head injuries.
Following this a licence review was held by Walsall Council's licensing committee, which decided to suspend the sale of alcohol and entertainment with immediate effect for 28 days.
Pc Lisa Fellows, the licensing officer for Walsall Police said: ”This is an unusual step to take, but having assessed the seriousness of the incident we felt that there was a need to act quickly.
"Whilst we are always keen to work with licensed premises and offer support where appropriate, this matter warranted a more robust and faster intervention.
"The premises has the right to object to the findings of the licensing committee and will be able to make full representation at the formal review hearing that will take place within 28 days.”
David Elrington, Regulatory Services Manager for Walsall Council said: “Walsall Council’s Licensing and Safety Sub-Committee considered both the papers before them and representations made in person by West Midlands Police and representatives of the premises licence holder.”
“The Sub-Committee took the decision to take the interim step of suspending the premises licence with immediate effect.”
