Walsall hotel evacuated after chemicals found in suspected counterfeit money scam

A hotel was evacuated after a bucket giving off noxious fumes - suspected to be part of a counterfeit money scam - was left in a room.

The Metro Inn Hotel on Birmingham Road, Walsall, was evacuated at around 3.30pm on Thursday, with three men who ran from the site now wanted by police.

Walsall Police Inspector Jack Boardman, said: "We were alerted by staff at the Metro just after 3pm after three men ran from the hotel and left behind a bucket of liquid in a room that was giving off noxious fumes.

"The hotel was evacuated as a precaution. Chemical experts were called to the scene to assess the substance; it was found to be an inert chemical suspected to have been used in a counterfeit money scam.

"The chemical did not pose a risk to the public and no-one was injured.

"Efforts are underway to try and identify and locate the three men who left the hotel."
