Sgt James Harrison was attacked at Asda in Dudley's High Street last night.

He and other officers had been sent to reports of a woman with a knife at around 8.20pm. While a 19-year-old suspect was being detained Sgt Harrison was stabbed in the leg.

He was taken to hospital where he was checked over and he is now recovering at home.

Tom Cuddeford, Interim Chair of West Midlands Police Federation, posted a picture of Sgt Harrison's wound on Twitter and said: “Sergeant Harrison and the team’s actions are a real act of bravery and another example of how officers run towards danger to put the safety of the public first.”

Ch Spt Steve Graham, Head of Force Response, added: “I am proud of the actions and bravery of Sgt Harrison and his team.

“The selfless quick action taken by the team to protect the public from being hurt is an exceptional piece of police work and their actions demonstrate outstanding courage.”

An Asda spokesman said: "We're assisting police with their enquiries."

The 19-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of wounding.
