Balbir Kaur recruited her 21-year-old son Manvir Singh to carry out the attack which left Samson Masih, aged 37, close to death after she lured the victim to her flat.

The 43-year-old was found guilty of soliciting murder and her son was convicted of attempted murder following a trial at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Mother of three Kaur invited both men to her home at Alfred Gunn House, Thompson Road, Oldbury, on October 12 after telling her son: 'Come and kill him,' the jury heard.

The men left the flat together three minutes later and walked to nearby Primrose Bank where a car containing several men was parked. Others involved are still being hunted by police.

When Singh grabbed Mr Masih round the neck it was the signal for the others to jump out of the silver VW Passat and ambush the victim.

They caused terrible injuries with a machete-type weapon, metal bar and knife, breaking one of his legs along with bones in his face and back. He also suffered a fractured skull, bleed on the brain and a deep laceration to the head.

Mr Masih said while giving evidence from behind a screen: "I remember walking out of the flats with Manvir Singh and the next thing I recall is waking up in hospital."

Mr Robert Price, prosecuting, told the jury: "Common sense will tell you it is a matter of luck rather than the judgement of those involved that he survived. They were intent on ending his life." He added that Kaur was 'jealous and paranoid.'

The unconscious victim had 15 separate sites of injury when found and was detained in hospital for several weeks.

Dr Alexander Kolar estimated the number of blows struck during the sustained attack was 'into double figures.'

Mr Masih had been going out with Kaur for several months when 'difficulties and tension' crept into the relationship.

She told 'wicked lies' to relatives - especially her son - about the alleged treatment she received from him, claiming to have been forced to have sex, the court heard.

Kaur was arrested two days later and admitted to police she had told her son to 'come and kill' the victim, believing she was going to have sex against her will again. She later alleged this had been said in anger and not meant.

Mr Masih explained: "I saw it as a casual relationship. I liked her, she liked me and I was going to see how things turned out."

Singh from Green Lane, Walsall and his mother were each remanded in custody until a date to be fixed for pre sentence reports. Judge James Burbidge QC told her: "You have been found guilty on significant evidence and are going to receive a substantial prison sentence."

During the trial Zaaqir Islaam, aged 20, from Lime Road, Wednesbury was acquitted of all charges alleged against him.
