Jeremiah Regis murder: Injuries of "varying age"
An inquest on a two-and-a-half year-old boy who died after suffering more than 100 injuries was opened yesterday (THUR).
Jeremiah Regis died at New Cross Hospital after police and paramedics were called to High Street, Wednesfield, on November 20 last year.
His injuries included a bite to the chest and a complex skull fracture.
The hearing in Oldbury yesterday heard Jeremiah had a range of both healing and fresh injuries.
Coroner Zafar Siddique, said: "An initial autopsy showed multiple injuries of varying age to many areas of the body's surface.
"The fresh injuries suggest blunt impact or use of a weapon."
A post-mortem examination showed Jeremiah died of abdominal peritonitis caused by blunt force trauma.
Sindyann Regis, aged 25, of High Street, Wednesfield, and 27-year-old Chevaze Mcgregor, of New Road in Rainford, Essex - the toddler's mother and stepfather - are both charged with murder.
They are yet to enter pleas with a provisional trial date set for May or June.
Yesterday Mr Siddique also gave an account of what Mr McGregor told police and paramedics when they arrived at the family's flat.
He said: "Mr McGregor said the child had been vomiting for 24 hours from 2am on November 20.
"He said he had vomited a number of times during the day but otherwise he was well.
"Mr McGregor said he had 'googled' the symptoms and given the child dry bread, but that it didn't help.
"He said they went to bed at 9pm. They woke to the child asking for a drink. His breathing was shallow and he called neighbours and an ambulance."
The court heard Jeremiah had been born in Romford, East London.
Mr Siddique adjourned the inquest pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.
